The MUSIC 123 program was developed for grades 1 through 3 based on extensive research and consultation with experts in the field. This elementary music enrichment program is provided to schools, free-of-charge and continues to be improved based on these classroom experiences.  It is a six week program with 30 minute classes once a week.  The program started in the fall of 2018 and has been presented at Spreckels, Doyle, Miramar Ranch, Tierrasanta and Cesar Chavez Elementary.

STARTING OUT- OVERVIEW

THE BASICS- SESSIONS 1-3

The first three sessions include an introduction to different instruments, the basics of music notation (coupled with a grade-appropriate math connection), use of volume and speed variation, the basics of rhythm, and introduction to all types of percussion instruments that are provided for the students to play.

WORLD MUSIC- SESSION 5

In the fifth session, there is an introduction to music from around the world with a video and audio file showing where each country is located relative to San Diego, along with pictures of local culture while the music is playing.

BRINGING IT ALL TOGETHER- SESSION 6

The last session is focused on how music makes you feel which includes audio clips of music invoking a variety of moods and a segment showing how music enhances video in movies.  The final program component is the “freeze dance”.  In this segment, there are a dozen audio clips of about 30 seconds each with 3 seconds of quiet time in between.

All different types of music are included from rock to Irish jig to ballet to square dancing and the students dance to each segment in whatever way the music makes them feel, then freeze during the quiet time in between waiting for the next song to start. It is essentially an interpretive dance game that has been very popular with all of the classes to date.  I have also selected six great marches and have the students enter and exit each session (assuming we are in a space other than their classroom) in a single file line marching in time.  This is also a very popular session component with both the students and the teachers.

OUR MISSION

Our mission is to create an interest in and appreciation for music that will last a lifetime by providing sessions focused on all types and aspects of music in a way that is educational, engaging, and fun for all.
